The pretty, easy to keep and quite robust redfin tetra (Aphyocharax anisitsi) from the Rio Paraná in South America grows up to 5 cm long. It is also known as Aphyocharax rubripinnis. In aquaristics this pretty little tetra is known since about 1900.
Redfin tetras have - as the name suggests - red fins with a bright fringe and are otherwise more or less champagne colored with a fine green metallic sheen. Females have a slightly more compact build, males are more slender and slender relative to this.
Aphyocharax anisitsi is a peaceful group fish that will group into a school in stressful situations. When the fish are relaxed, they swim around individually or even in small groups among the plants. Less than 10 redfin tetras should not be kept in the aquarium.
In the aquarium you can breed Aphyocharax anisitsi quite easily. The redfin tetra is a free spawner and spawn predator. Breeding is possible in soft to medium hard water with a pH of about 6 to 7 and a temperature of about 23-28 °C. It helps if the breeding aquarium is weedy and somewhat darkened with floating plants . The females lay 300-500 eggs. After spawning, the breeding pair should be removed from the rearing tank. Young redfin tetras grow relatively quickly. Ideally, rotifers and artemia euplii should be given at first, and later other small live foods such as microworms or even cyclops.
In the aquarium the redfin tetra likes a dense marginal planting and swimming space in the middle. Aphyocharax anisitsi does well in soft to hard water. The water temperature should be 20-28 °C. At lower temperatures these tetras are not quite as colorful as at higher temperatures.
Like most true tetras, the Redfin Tetra is a typical omnivore, eating insects, their larvae or small crustaceans in addition to algae in nature. Living food and frost food accept the little demanding tetra in the aquarium just as gladly as flake food or granulated food.
The beautifully marked, easy to keep redfin tetra will not eat larger shrimp, though it is possible that they will prey on juvenile shrimp. Socialization with a shrimp species that reproduces well, such as Neocaridina or Sulawesi domestic shrimp, but also with large shrimp such as fan shrimp or Amano shrimp can work very well. The more surface-oriented Redfin Tetra can also be socialized with peaceful dwarf c rayfish in the aquarium. Socialization with other peaceful fish is very possible.
Our food recommendation: NatureHolic professional main feed is a professional main feed for all aquarium fish. We supply Hauptfeed in the form of a soft granulate which, thanks to its grain size of half a millimeter, can be easily ingested by small to medium-sized fish. The soft consistency resembles the texture of insect larvae in nature and protects the fish mouth from micro-injuries.
Our plant recommendation: Use for planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free from algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
