Like all spear leaves from the genus Anubias, the broad-leaved spear leaf Anubias barteri var. barteri is a slow-growing plant that grows in nature in the splash water area of fast-flowing streams, sometimes even submerged. The broadleaf spear leaf is quite variable in leaf shape. The dark green, firm leaves are not eaten by most herbivores, so the Spear Leaf is also very suitable for perch tanks. The rhizome, unlike other Anubias species, occasionally has a tendency to grow vertically upward instead of along the substrate.
Anubias barteri var. barteri grows in nature in shade to partial shade and does not need much light in the aquarium. As a typical perching plant, it does not tolerate planting in soil, gravel or sand well, so it should be tied up on hard substrate such as root wood or stones. This variety is one of the Anubias that grows a little faster, yet it still grows exceptionally slowly compared to other aquatic plants.
To propagate Anubias barteri var. barteri, simply cut off a piece of the rhizome, where there should still be two or more leaves. Tie it up again - done.
Anubias barteri var. barteri can also be cultivated emersed in a very humid environment (for example, an aquaterrarium or paludarium with correspondingly high humidity).
This XXL plant in a 9x9 cm pot makes an impressive specimen.
Our recommendation: For magnificent plant growth, we recommend premium nutrient medium when setting up a new plant NatureHolic GroundBooster
Expert Tip: With the NatureHolic plant adhesive stick this plant gently and easily on stones, roots and decoration . Made in Germany, the adhesive does not pollute the water and has no negative impact on the stock.
