Origin: | Southeast Asia |
Genus: | Lomariopsis |
Lomariopsis lineata, the freshwater seaweed, occurs in nature in Southeast Asia. Despite its somewhat misleading name, this slightly transparent, bottle-green colored plant is not a seaweed or a moss - it is the prothallium (i.e., a precursor) of a fern. In the aquarium, however, freshwater kelp never reaches the fern stage .
The smooth, multi-branched shoots of freshwater kelp provide an ideal surface for beneficial biofilms to colonize. These microorganisms provide biological water purification and break down organic pollutants. Baby shrimp in particular not only find hiding places in freshwater kelp, but also a very natural, abundant food source thanks to the microorganisms. The kelp itself is not eaten.
At first glance, freshwater kelp resembles the liverwort Monosolenium tenerum, but the shoots of Lomariopsis lineata do not have a midrib and are much less brittle.
Since Lomariopsis lineata does not sprout but sinks, it can be easily cultivated on the aquarium floor as a ground cover, but freshwater kelp can also be tied up on wooden decorations or stones. Rarely, the plant also forms adhesive roots and then grows up frilly on hard surfaces, which looks very attractive.
Propagation of freshwater kelp is very simple and is done by plucking the cushions apart.
Our recommendation: For a splendid plant growth we recommend the use of the NatureHolic fertilizer series and for new plants the Premium Nutrient Substrate NatureHolic GroundBooster.
Expert Tip: With the NatureHolic plant glue you stick this plant gently and uncomplicated on stones, roots and decoration . Made in Germany, the adhesive does not pollute the water and has no negative impact on the stock.
