The three-banded Corydoras trilineatus, very popular in aquaristics, comes from fast-flowing rivers in the middle reaches of the Amazon in South America. The short-snouted three-banded Corydoras trilineatus has three striking longitudinal stripes along its body: silver - black - silver. Otherwise, its silvery body is covered by a dark stripe pattern and dot pattern that extends into the fins. The short mouth of Corydoras trilineatus has the typical pairs of barbels.

The males of Corydoras trilineatus are only about 5 cm in size. The females become with up to 6 cm somewhat larger and are also clearly thicker.
