The Guppy is one of the most popular ornamental fishes and it is hard to imagine aquaristics without it. The charming Lemon Guppy is a great color variation of the Poecilia reticulata, which is actually native to South America. With its great name-giving yellow radiant color, the Lemon Guppy makes the hearts of Guppy fans beat faster and always ensures a good mood in the aquarium with its lively and uncomplicated nature. However, the Guppy is not for nothing also called "million fish", therefore you acquire here a pure male group, in order to work against an uncontrolled multiplication. For ambitious breeders we also have females and breeding accessories in our store.
Of course, a pure male group loses nothing of its charm - since they are not constantly courting and scuffling, even their permanent stress is reduced, which is why they are much healthier and live longer. The Lemon Guppy shines on the front body white to silvery and shows only on the rear body up to the tail root and of course on the fins its radiant sun yellow. Depending on the incidence of light the back iridesces.
Externally, Guppies can be distinguished from each other quite well: especially the females are much more stable and also somewhat larger. In addition, males develop more intense colors. The anal fin of the males is transformed into a mating fin, that of the females resembles a sail. Guppies are constantly in a courtship mood and mate very frequently. A single female can store sperm for a long time and fertilize herself several times. About every 21 days she releases up to 40 live young, which is why guppies are counted among the so-called livebearers. Guppies are not particularly caring parents and will occasionally eat their own offspring if they do not hide in time. With fine plants or also breeding boxes, like we have in our store, you can put a stop to this natural selection.
The new home for the great Lemon Guppy should be at least 54 liters. The in places dense planting may be gladly in the background or at the edges, because the wuseligen comrades are the whole day on the move and need enough swimming space. They also like to hide in dense herbage or retreat here to rest. The Guppy is very undemanding with regard to its water values and tolerates both soft water and hard water. However, this should be properly maintained and regularly changed, so that he remains healthy.
The Lemon Guppy gets along very well in the community aquarium and is a peaceful companion. Since it is closely related to the Endler Gu ppy, it is better not to keep these two together, as they could hybridize. Great alternative buddies are however Platies, Mollies or also Tetras and Loricariids, as well as Corydoras dwarf armored catfish. Especially in a South American tank, the friendly Lemon Guppy with its bright color ensures good mood and attention! Well reproducing dwarf shrimp species from the genus Neocaridina such as the Red Fire also do well. However, it happens from time to time that a cheeky juvenile is eaten, so the tank should have appropriate retreat possibilities with caves and the appropriate planting. Also the popular Amano shrimp is a suitable co-inhabitant. Guppies are bottom sleepers and should therefore better not be kept together with crayfish, as these could nip him in the soft fins.
The omnivorous Lemon Guppy can be easily fed in the aquarium with standard dry or flake foods, as well as granules. Guppies also like to nibble on algae coverings and can occasionally be treated to over-scalded vegetables such as Hokkaido chips, cucumber, peppers or zucchini . Mosquito larvae, daphnia, artemia or cyclops can also be offered to them as treats from time to time.
Our food recommendationNatureHolic Guppyfeed is a fine soft granulate with 0.5 mm grain thickness, which is suitable as a staple food for all aquarium fish and especially for guppies. The soft consistency of the food beads is reminiscent of that of natural insect larvae. It protects the sensitive fish mouth from micro injuries caused by hard or sharp-edged food. In addition to animal food, guppies also need a vegetable component in their diet. As special additives we add garlic extract and the leaf powder of the miracle tree Moringa olifera to NatureHolic Guppyfeed. These herbal additives are said to have positive effects on the immune system and the colorfulness of the colorful fish.
Our plant recommendation: Use for planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planaria and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
