from over 3,000 reviews "The exact determination of brain corals of the genera Favia / Favites sp. is not so easy, so we offer you here a mix of the two genera. The beautifully structured and colored Favia and Favites species belong to the large polyp stony corals or LPS corals. Their special shape and structure has earned them the name brain coral. These LPS corals originate from the Indo-Pacific.
As LPS corals, the popular colorful Favia / Favites stony corals are not as demanding in care as the small polyped and quite demanding SPS corals. Large polyped stony corals like the brain coral are therefore optimal for beginners in coral keeping in the reef aquarium. However, their beautiful shapes and structures also appeal to advanced and professional marine aquarists.
The coloration and the speed of growth in the brain coral Favia / Favites sp. depends on the light intensity and on the free availability of nutrients in the seawater and can vary somewhat.
The pretty, rather large growing brain corals Favia / Favites sp. are suitable for seawater reef tanks from about 200 liters. They need only rather less strong to medium strong light and can therefore be placed in the lower to middle area of your reef. These brain corals should rather not be shaded. Favia / Favites sp. need a medium current and should not sit directly in a strong water current.
Feeding Favia / Favites sp. with fine plant and animal plankton in the reef aquarium results in better growth and more beautiful, intense colors.
Propagation of this brain coral is relatively easy - you can cut off an offshoot and attach it with a suitable coral glue on a suitable stone or directly on your reef.
