The cultivar 'Harbich Red' remains significantly smaller than the parent form of E. cordifolius. The emersed leaves are roundish with hairy petioles, the submerged leaves are narrower in the aquarium. The species is very hardy and has firm, stiff leaves. It forms a lot of adventitious plants at the flowering stem, but they can develop well only in open aquariums. The cultivar name 'Harbich Red' is derived from the reddish new leaves, but they slowly turn green.
