A great ground cover plant for the foreground is the New Zealand grass plant. Also known as Lilaeopsis novae-zelandiae, this aquarium plant is believed to actually originate from New Zealand.
Lilaeopsis is an undemanding plant, which thanks to its low height of only 5-7 cm, its grass-like narrow light green leaflets and its fast spreading by means of runners is really suitable for the foreground and for the creation of grass landscapes. Thanks to the runners, the carpets of New Zealand grass very quicklybecome beautifully dense.
Lilaeopsis needs only medium light and does not need extra CO2 fertilization. From time to time the stands have to be thinned out, because otherwise the plants push themselves in layers on top of each other and the lower leaves suffer from the lack of light. Also, the runners should always be cut off where they threaten to leave their intended area, otherwise the New Zealand grass will eventually sprawl throughout the entire tank.
To propagate, simply cut off runners with daughter plants and plant them elsewhere.
Lilaeopsis looks particularly beautiful in combination with small-leaved plants such as Hemianthus or Lobelia cardinalis "Mini". Such a mixture in the foreground looks very natural, more natural than a monoculture - although of course an "English lawn" of Lilaeopsis alone does have its appeal.
Here you buy the New Zealand grass in the InVitro cup from laboratory culture. It is guaranteed free of pathogens and algae, it does not bring snails or worms, and it has not been treated with pesticides. Rinse the culture medium from the roots and start shaping the foreground - very simple!
For better planting, the contents of the cup Lilaeopsis cut into pieces of about 2x2 cm, which are then simply inserted into the substrate with a little distance from each other. The runners soon begin to grow and close the gaps.
