Microsorum pteropus 'Windeløv' has received its cultivar name after the founder of the Tropica aquarium nursery, Holger Windeløv. This java fern has relatively broad medium green leaves that fade into antler-like fringes. The nano-sized java fern sits already tied up on a root with a suction cup, making it ideal for increasing the usable surface area in the aquarium for shrimp, crabs and also for crabs in the aquaterrarium and terrarium . Here you can ideally design with different root sizes and thus bring variety into the aquarium structure.
In nature Microsorum pteropus "Windeløv" is found in the tropics of Asia. There the fern grows as a perennial partially submerged on wood and stones at the edge of bodies of water.
Windelov Java fern is a low demanding plant that grows slowly and does not need much care. It can be grown well in low-light aquariums, and even in terrariums it does fine on the terrestrial part, provided the humidity is high.
However, java fern should not be planted - the rhizome can start to rot if it is covered by substrate. It is optimal to tie up java fern on a piece of root wood or stone like here.
