Sri Lanka is home to a great many species of water lily, including Cryptocoryne beckettii. It has also been successfully maintained in aquariums for decades. In its natural habitat, it is found in shady areas along the banks of streams and rivers, where it grows amphibiously above and below water. The coloration of its submerged leaves is variable from shades of green to brown. Varying coloration of leaves in the same species is typical of the genus Cryptocoryne.
