Ivantsoff's blue-eye, Pseudomugil ivantsoffi, also known as Timika blue-eye, is a small freshwater fish from southern New Guinea suitable for smaller aquarium. This peaceful fish can be easily socialized with other ornamental fish and dwarf shrimp.
Male Pseudomugil ivantsoffi have a semi-transparent head and body, usually with a bluish or reddish hue. The female fish are more transparent and yellowish in the lower ventral region, without the distinct red hues of the males.
Ivantsoff's blueeyes can grow up to 4 cm in size and therefore require an aquarium with an edge length of at least 60 cm. It is important that the fish have adequate swimming space and are kept in groups of at least 5-10. Sufficient planting in the aquarium helps minimize possible territorial fights among the male fish.
The fish prefer soft to medium hard water with a pH between 6.5-7.2 and should be kept at a water temperature of 22-30°C. Ivantsoff's blueeyes eat fine live or frozen foods and also prefer ornamental fish foods.
Breeding Ivantsoff's blueeye in the aquarium is possible without any problems. The fish lay their eggs on fine-feathered aquarium plants and the fry hatch after 2-3 weeks, depending on water temperature. To protect the fry, either collect the eggs from the aquarium and transfer them to a rearing tank or remove the adult fish from the spawning tank.
