Genus: | Marsilea |
The dwarf clover fern Marsilea crenata from Australia and Oceania is a great ground cover for the aquarium and aquascape. The plant is called clover fern because of its emersed leaves, which look like four-leaved lucky clover. The submerged form consists of a roundish dark green leaf on a short stem. Marsilea crenata is a perfect ground cover plant for the foreground, growing only 1-2 inches tall and forming beautiful dense carpets.
Marsilea crenata does very well with medium to strong light. Under weaker light, the plants sprout sporadic long-stalked four-leaf clover-shaped leaves. They can easily be cut off. CO2 fertilization is not essential for the successful care of Marsilea crenata, but can promote growth and support a compact growth habit.
With proper care, the undemanding dwarf clover fern grows moderately fast and spreads over a wide area via runners. Marsilea is ideally suited, for example, to reinforce slope fills in aquascapes and to protect them from slipping.
The more light Marsilea crenata gets, the more compact and dense the ground cover grows in the aquarium. Every now and then, groups of plants need to be thinned out. To do this, simply take groups of runners from the ground and cut them off.
The dwarf clover fern spreads via long runners with leaflets at intervals of about 1 cm and can thus also be propagated perfectly. To do this, cut off 2-4 cm long sections of the rhizomes at a time and replant them.
This dwarf clover fern was grown in the plant technology laboratory from tissue in a cup (in vitro culture). It may be added to the aquarium without prior watering, and you do not need to quarantine it. Dwarf clover fern from InVitro culture is guaranteed free from pathogens and from algae. Pesticides or aggressive fertilizers are not used in its cultivation. Also passengers such as worms, small crustaceans, snails and so on are excluded. Before insertion, only the transparent nutrient medium must be rinsed from the roots - this is best done under running water.
You can also grow dwarf clover fern above water in a terrarium or waterfall aquarium - then it will show its typical clover-shaped four-leaf emersed leaves. You can also cultivate Marsilea crenata in shallow water, then the plant also sprouts four-leaf floating leaves.
