Still relatively unknown, although in the trade since 2005, but by no means uninteresting, is the Neon Blue Algae Goby, Stiphodon atropurpureus, which originates from fast flowing, clear and weedy rivers in Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia and the Philippines sstammt and due to its behavior and color becomes a real eye-catcher in the aquarium.
The 5-7 cm long Neon Blue Algae Goby has a long, round body, depending on the sex, which is creamy yellow and spotted both brown and green in the upper color, and also shimmers metallic neon blue, appearing darker to black in the males, with a distinct neon blue metallic glow. The rounded semi-transparent caudal fin has speckles and a turquoise fin fringe along the upper edge. As is common for gobies, the Neon Blue Algae Goby also has a suction disc as a ventral fin, which it rests on when resting.
It can be socialized with other peaceful fish and also larger invertebrates. However, due to their prey drive, juveniles of the latter are not likely to emerge, although their main diet consists of algae, algal growth and the accompanying fauna living underneath. The Algae Goby likes to live in groups and usually behaves peacefully, only intraspecific territorial disputes may occur, especially during mating season. A pure species tank is recommended for these pretty animals.
The sexes can be distinguished by color intensity, whereby the animals tend to fade under stress. So far there are no breeding reports on them, although some Stiphodon species also reproduce in freshwater, but the eggs of most species require brackish water additions or even seawater. Therefore, it is hoped that ambitious enthusiasts of these great neon gobies will continue to try their hand at breeding them.
According to its habitat the Neon Blue Goby prefers an aquarium from 54 liters with fine substrate like sand, as well as a structured underwater landscape of roots and stones, as well as partly dense planting, which nevertheless allows enough swimming space. The rather soft to slightly alkaline water should always be well aerated and hygienic, also the goby needs a good current to feel comfortable. A pH-value of 6,5-7,5 has proven itself, furthermore a temperature between 22-28° C.
Although the Neon Blue Algae Goby is better kept in a species aquarium due to its somewhat demanding behavior, it can be easily socialized with other peaceful fish that are not too hectic, but also large invertebrates, such as fan shrimp. As bottom dwellers, socialization with dwarf crayfish and large crayfish is rather not recommended.
As its name suggests, the Neon Blue Algae Goby feeds on algae, algal growth, and probably diatoms and the microfauna living underneath. However, it will not disdain offered live food and frozen food , so this should be offered to it only occasionally. If the aquarium does not have enough food, it should be offered algae in the form of tablets, plankton, granules and flakes or so-called algae stones.
Our feed recommendation: This NatureHolic Main Feed is a professional staple feed for all aquarium fish. Main feed we supply in the form of soft granules, which thanks to its grain size of half a millimeter can be easily absorbed by small to medium-sized fish. The soft consistency resembles the texture of insect larvae in nature and protects the fish mouth from micro-injuries.
Our plant recommendation: Use for planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free from algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
