The Purple Carnaval Vampire Crab Geosesarma sp. really looks like a Chinese New Year party - the wonderfully bright colors of this as yet undetermined vampire crab just pop! Its bright purple clawed hands contrast wonderfully with its dark purple face, blue-purple legs, and squeaky orange dorsal shield. The dark purple eyes of the Purple Carnaval Vampire Crab from Indonesia are simply enchanting. Geosesarma sp. "Purple Carnaval" is a very appreciated land crab for a humid terrarium thanks to its great colors and interesting social behavior.
The Purple Carnaval vampire crab Geosesarma sp. has a carapace diameter of about 1.5 to 2 cm and thus belongs to the rather small to medium sized Geosesarma species. The ventral valve of the males of the Purple Carnaval Vampire Crab Geosesarma sp. is pointed V-shaped in the front, while the ventral valve of the females is broader and U-shaped rounded.
As a social group animal, the Purple Carnaval Vampire Crab Geosesarma sp. depends on living with conspecifics of its own species. Please do not keep the Purple Carnaval land crab as a single animal, solitary keeping is not species appropriate for this great little social crab. You should not keep this Geosesarma sp. with other crab species in a terrarium - the Purple Carnaval Vampire Crab is best kept in a species terrarium. You can add springtails and / or white isopods, which will take care of food scraps and at the same time serve as live food source for the colorful little crabs.
For these Geosesarma land crabs a diversely furnished wet terrarium with a shallow water part of about 10 cm depth is optimal. Geosesarma sp. "Purple Carnaval" is a land crab that is well adapted to life above water. A water bowl with fresh water is easily enough for them in a sufficiently humid terrarium. A larger water part is possible, but not necessary. The water hardness does not matter. Especially when molting, Purple Carnaval Vampire Crabs sometimes like to go into shallow water.
For a small group of 5-6 vampire crabs a tank with a footprint of 60 x 30 cm or more is super suitable. You should always keep these Geosesarma sp. with excess females - for example 2 males in a group with 3-4 females.
The Purple Carnaval Vampire Crab Geosesarma sp. needs an air temperature of 20 to 26 °C and a humidity of about 80-90% in its humid terrarium. You can keep the humidity sufficiently high by regular spraying in the morning and evening and by using a nebulizer. Also the substrate should be permanently moist. Geosesarma sp. "Purple Carnaval" is a skilled climber, therefore the terrarium must be really escape-proof. Doors and ventilation plates must close tightly without gaps.
As substrate in the humid terrarium for the Purple Carnaval vampire crabs coco humus or terrarium humus are well suited. Geosesarma do not eat plants, so you can plant the terrarium to your heart 's content. Keep in mind that the Purple Carnival Vampire Crab likes to dig short burrows in the substrate, and leave a few areas unplanted. The substrate should be about 10 cm high. Brown foliage also serves as a welcome hiding place for the purple orange Geosesarma.
The Purple Carnaval Vampire Crab Geosesarma sp. belongs to the specialized reproductive type: the females carry few, but large eggs in their abdominal flap, which they care for and clean until the fully developed young crabs hatch. The small Geosesarma make themselves after the hatching directly on the socks in the terrarium and go on their own discovery trip.
Because the adults in the vampire crabs chase the young and the small Geosesarma also eat each other, you need many hiding places of all sizes in the Geosesarma terrarium for successful breeding. Tubes, a thick layer of brown foliage, perforated bricks and good structure in general. Many hiding places and a varied setup in the terrarium increase the survival chances of the young animals decisively. Raising the young Purple Carnaval Vampire Crabs Geosesarma sp. in their own well furnished rearing terrarium without adults is even better.
The Purple Carnaval Vampire Crab Geosesarma sp. is a pure carnivore and likes frozen food, freeze-dried insects and worms and of course live food in the form of white isopods, small worms and springtails. As a dry food we can recommend our special food for carnivorous crabs NatureHolic Krabbenfeed.
