Vampire Crab "Vampire Ultra Purple Arm" - Geosesarma spec.

The Ultra Purple Arm Vamp ire Crab looks quite similar to the classic purple vampire crab, but probably belongs to a different species and is therefore not listed here as Geosesarma dennerle, but as Geosesarma sp. It originates from Southeast Asia and belongs to the popular vampire crabs, which are so popular in terraristics because of their beautiful colors, their relatively easy keeping and their compatibility. The Ultra Purple Arm Vampire Crab can often be seen in the terrarium during the daytime after a period of acclimation.

The Ultra Purple Arm Vampire Crab has bright light purple claw arms that stand out against the darker colored body. Along with the bright orange eyes, this crab just looks interesting, a bit mysterious, and simply beautiful in color. With a carapace diameter of about 2 to 3 inches, the Ultra Purple Arm Vampire Crab remains rather medium-sized for a Geosesarma species.  The males of the Ultra Purple Arm Vampire Crab are easily recognized by their V-shaped belly pouch that tapers towards the front, while the females have a wider belly pouch that resembles an upside down U in shape.

The Ultra Purple Arm Vampire Crab is a socially inclined group animal that likes to interact with conspecifics, needs their company, and therefore should not be kept singly. As a general rule, please do not socialize the Geosesarma sp. "Ultra Purple Arm" group in your wetland terrarium, including with other invertebrates, especially other crabs, even those of the same genus.

The Ultra Purple Arm Vampire Crab is a land crab and therefore reproduces in the specialized reproductive type. Here the females carry relatively few, proportionally larger eggs, from which no larvae hatch, but fully developed miniature versions of the parents. These juvenile crabs go directly on a voyage of discovery in the terrarium and no longer have to pass through larval stages in the water. Although the young crabs are quite cannibalistic among themselves, and the adults also sometimes chase the babies, but if the terrarium is sufficiently large and the young crabs find there many Hiding places for example smaller tubes or piles of leaves, some young animals will come up anyway. Generally, a varied setup of the terrarium helps the crabs get along well. An early separation of the young animals or a separate rearing terrarium with many hiding places can decisively increase the survival rates of the young crabs.

A small group of Ultra Purple Arm Vampire Crabs of 3 animals can be kept well already in a diversely furnished terrarium cube of 40x40x40 cm, a somewhat larger group of 5-6 Ultra Purple Arm Crabs fits well in a humid terrarium from 60x30 cm floor space. It is best to keep this Geosesarma sp. with excess females - for example 2 males with 3-4 females. Geosesarma sp. "Ultra Purple Arm" is a semi-terrestrial land crab and therefore well adapted to life on land. Therefore it does not need a deep water part, but a bathing bowl of about 10 cm height (or shallower) with fresh water no matter what water hardness is gladly accepted as bathing place. Please pay attention to exit possibilities from this bowl!

The bottom in a species-appropriate crab terrarium for Geosesarma sp. "Ultra Purple Arm" is about 10 cm and thus offers the crabs possibilities to dig their short living bur rows. Ideal substrates are coco humus or terrarium humus. The soil is kept permanently moist, which has a favorable effect on the humidity in the terrarium. A terrarium for a group of Geosesarma sp. "Ultra Purple Arm" can be planted well, because the crabs do not eat plants. We recommend especially different Sit-on plantsbecause the Ultra Purple Arm vampire crabs can then dig burrows without negative consequences.

The Ultra Purple Arm Vampire Crab needs an air temperature of 20 to 26 °C and a humidity of about 80-90%. It is best to spray daily in the morning and evening in a humid terrarium, or alternatively use a nebulizer. Geosesarma sp. "Ultra Purple Arm" is an active crab that likes to climb. Therefore, doors and ventilation panels of the humid terrarium must close tightly without gaps.

The Ultra Purple Arm Vampire Crab clearly prefers animal food, plants are not eaten at all. We recommend high quality frozen food, FD food (freeze-dried insects or similar) and live food in the form of white isopods or springtails for daily feeding of this Geosesarma species. These useful little animals also take care of dead plant parts in the wet terrarium and uneaten food. A special food for carnivorous crabsis also very suitable for feeding the Ultra Purple Arm Geosesarma.
