Small tussock fern Salvinia auriculata is also known commercially as Salvinia natans. The floating plant Salvinia auriculata has densely seated small leaves and is suitable for all aquarium sizes, including nanos. Tufted fern has more rounded-oval medium green leaves that sit in groups of three on the shoot axils. Two of the three leaves sitting together on the shoot axis are green and heavily hairy: the floating leaves. The third leaf branches downward in a pinnate manner, fulfilling the function of a root, even though, strictly speaking, it is not one. In the leaves covered with hairs water repellent, the lotus effect can be beautifully observed - water drops simply roll off.
The shoots grow to 2-20 cm long and break apart very easily. This is also a very simple way to propagate tussock fern: The shoot is divided and then simply cultivated further on the water surface.
Salvinia auriculata is a quite robust and fast growing floating plant, which prefers temperatures of 10-28 °C and then forms dense carpets on the water surface. Ideally, the Small Tufted Fern should be allowed to grow in open tanks, as the plant does not tolerate condensation dripping down from above well in the long run. In the warm season, tussock fern can also be used on the garden pond. The water values play only a very minor role.
Against algae plagues, this strong grower can be used very well, because it eliminates nutrient peaks in the water and shades the pool somewhat, so that algae have no chance to come up at all. For shrimps and rather shy fish it is very good if they have some cover from above and the light does not shine so strongly into the aquarium.
