No wonder that this colorful fish, which belongs to the Nothobranchius, has a huge circle of fans, because with its colorfulness its name is more than just program. Especially the males show incredible colors. The basic color of the animals is almost turquoise and they have a great red net pattern over the whole body. Also the fins show red spots and partly red and black fin fringes. On the ventral side, Nothobranchius rachovii appears lighter, the ventral and pectoral fins are transparent yellow, the latter occasionally even purple. The females are clearly distinguished by their rather mousey color. The splendid carps grow to about 6 cm in size and live for a maximum of 2 years.

Rachow's splendid carps can be bred in the aquarium. The pretty animals are bottom spawners and prefer peat fibers as spawning substrate, in which the animals lay their eggs. This is then removed from the spawning aquarium together with the spawn and dried. At the appropriate time, it is again infused with water, and salt additions also strengthen the health of the offspring. After a while the first young hatch, which can be fed with Artemia nauplii. Generally the development of the embryos takes a little more than half a year.

The aquarium for Rachnow's splendor ground carps can already have an edge length of 60 cm. A special feature of these pretty comrades is above all their sensitivity to fluctuations in temperature, but also to water values. Therefore they should not be maintained above 24 °C, also they react suspiciously to current - a weak filtering with a HMF is sufficient for them. A dense planting in places serves them as a retreat, a dark substrate provides a sense of security. Regarding their water parameters they can be maintained at a total hardness of 2-15 °dGH, as well as a carbonate hardness of maximum 7 °dKH and an optimal pH value of 6.5 . Small amounts of salt added to the water strengthen their defenses.

The peaceful animals can be well socialized with other peaceful fish that can cope with their water parameters. However, dwarf shrimps are likely to be eaten, dwarf crayfish could also nip the fins of these great animals, which is why they are rather unsuitable for socialization.

In their habitat, the great carnivorous splendid ground carps prefer to feed on approaching insects and other smaller invertebrates, but also small crustaceans. They also prefer this menu in the aquarium, which is why they are rather difficult to get used to commercially available foods. Their menu may therefore regularly include small Live- and Frozen food such as artemia, water fleas, gammarus, enchytraea and cyclops.
