The Black Fire algae shrimp, also known as black backstroke shrimp, is a wild form closely related to the Red Fire shrimp. It is a special color form of the popular algae shrimp backstroke shrimp.
In contrast to the striking red color form, the Black Fire Algae Shrimp is less spectacular in color at first glance, but it still offers many surprises and is surprisingly variable in color. Especially in the community tank, females exhibit a variety of black patterns, dotted blobs of color or black marbled lines. Occasionally, greenish, reddish or bluish animals may also appear.
As the name implies, the Black Fire Algae Shrimp likes to take care of young algae cover and other growth in the aquarium. It is also a scavenger and omnivore, removing dead plant matter, leftover food and carcasses of other aquarium animals before they can pollute the water and promote algae growth.
The Black Fire Algae Shrimp can grow up to three inches in size, with males remaining slightly smaller. It reproduces in freshwater where it provides numerous offspring. The females can carry 20 to 40 eggs every three to four weeks. Black Fire algae shrimp juveniles are independent when they hatch and do not go through a larval stage. Aquarium moss not only provides them with cover and hiding places, but also microorganisms, growth and valuable initial food.
The peaceful Black Fire Algae Shrimp are very suitable for nano aquariums and also for community aquariums, provided the co-inhabitants are peaceful and not too large. They can also be easily socialized with crayfish, freshwater crabs, snails and freshwater mussels. If you want to keep them together with other shrimp, you should pay attention to the water values and whether the animals can crossbreed. A group of 10 to 20 animals is a good initial stocking, as the Black Fire Algae Shrimp feel more comfortable in a group than alone. The Black Fire Algae Shrimp does not require heating and its ruggedness and beauty make it an excellent choice for beginners to invertebrate aquaristics.
