TGA Red staghorn snail - Clithon flavovirens

From the antler snail, also horn snail or sun sn ail Clithon flavovirens from Southeast Asia there is also a reddish-orange variant. It grows up to 2 cm and sometimes has a fine or even larger black or gray pattern. If the water values change, this pattern can also change. The namesake horns are very characteristic of this snail. This species of snail is not a hermaphrodite, which means that there are males and females - although they cannot be distinguished from each other by external characteristics.

Female staghorn snails place small beige egg cocoons on hard surfaces. They do not hatch into fully developed young snails, but into larvae. In nature, these so-called veligers are carried with the current into the sea, where they develop and grow into snails, which then migrate back into the freshwater areas of streams where they live. Theselarvae cannot survive in the aquarium , Clithon flavovirens has not yet been bred in captivity.

Staghorn snails have a tremendous appetite for algal cover and other growth, and they graze on the glass, rocks, wood, aquarium decorations, and plant leaves all day long. Healthy plants are not eaten. When snails are new to the aquarium, they often refuse artificial food. If there are not enough algae coverings and brown autumn leaves in the aquarium then, they are threatened with starvation. Therefore, this staghorn snail is not suitable for freshly established aquariums. Especially for these snails a special food which can prevent this danger.

The red sun snail can be socialized with all kinds of aquarium animals - as long as they do not eat snails! Crayfish, crabs, predatory snails and snail-eating fish are of course not good aquarium companions for them! Due to the special shape of its shell it is well protected from curious fish and also shrimps.

The red sun snail likes a pH of over 6.5 and prefers a KH of over 3. If it is kept in softer water, food containing calcium should definitely be given.
