TGA Yellow staghorn snail - Clithon subgranosum

Clithon subgranosum comes from small streams with a lot of current in Southeast Asia, where it lives in freshwater. It is also known as staghorn snail or sun snail. The yellow Clithon subgranosum looks quite similar to Clithon corona. Besides the typical spines, the aquarium snail has a bright yellow base color with a fine or even somewhat coarser black or gray pattern. If the water values change, the pattern of the snail can also change. Their shell reaches a diameter of up to 2 cm. Clithon corona is bisexual, but it is not possible to tell male and female apart from the outside.

Female staghorn snails lay whitish oval egg cocoons on hard substrates. From them hatch larvae, which in nature are washed into the sea with the current of the streams. There they grow into small snails, which then migrate back to freshwater. In the aquarium these snails have not yet been bred, they do not reproduce in freshwater.

The yellow Clithon corona eats algae coatings and biofilms from the aquarium glass and from stones, wood and plants all day long. It does not go to healthy plants. Artificial food is not eaten well at the beginning, so they should only be used in aquariums where there is enough growth to eat. To prevent them from starving, you can give a food specially designed for their needs. Brown Autumn leaves is also a good food base and is readily grazed. In very freshly set up aquariums, the staghorn snail may starve.

The yellow staghorn snail is excellent to socialize with all kinds of aquarium inhabitants. Their shell shape also protects them from curious fish and shrimp. However, they should not be kept together with snail-eaters such as crayfish, predatory snails, crabs and snail-eating fish.

Staghorn snails like a pH above 6.5, carbonate hardness should be higher than 3.
