The golden honey gourami, Trichogaster chuna, is a color form of the popular honey gourami, which is also called honey gourami. This rather small comrade can be kept well already from 54 liters aquariums and also by beginners. In its South Asian habitat the Honey Gourami inhabits stagnant and weak heavily weedy flowing waters and also rice fields. The Honey Gourami is the smallest of all gourami.
Our Golden Honey Gourami are available in pairs! The beautiful and honey-yellow-golden fish have a flattened round body with flat sides, the pelvic fins extended to threads are striking. Dorsal and anal fins start at the same height, the dorsal fin is pointedly extended. Especially during the mating season, the intense yellow-orange males turn bluish to black on the underside of the abdomen, while the females remain somewhat paler, sometimes with a longitudinal stripe, and grow somewhat larger at 5 cm. If the animals get under stress, for example after transport or during relocation, both can show a rather colorless stress coloration, but this will soon disappear. With good care Golden Honey Gourami can even live 5 years!
Golden Honey Gourami build foam nests at the water surface, into which the male spits the approx. 1 mm large eggs after mating. At mating time it changes color intensively and courts the female by performing a very interesting courtship dance: it stands on its tail fin and shows the female the way to its nest with its head. After about two days the larvae hatch, which for the time being still feed on their yolk sac and stay near the nest. Until then, the male takes over the brood care and even scares the mother away from the young. However, since both parents tend to eat their own young later, it is worthwhile to raise them separately in a rearing aquarium. There the young can be raised with infusoria and later with freshly hatched Artemia nauplii but also our NatureHolic YoungFeed dust food until they are big enough.
Golden Honey Gourami are excellent to keep in pairs already in a 54 liter aquarium. He does not have any special requirements for his new home, but still a few. As in its habitat it does not like strong currents and prefers a shady and weedy place at the water surface. In general, the aquarium may be densely planted in places so that fellow fish or shrimp can retreat. Since it, like Betta splendens, has developed a labyrinth organ with which it breathes atmospheric oxygen, it needs access to the water surface. The aquarium should also be covered, as the Golden Honey Gourami aquarium fish should not only jump sometimes, but likewise breathe in the heated air at the water surface, otherwise they may contract inflammation of the labyrinth organ.
The Golden Honey Gourami can easily cope with a total hardness (GH) between 10 -20 ° dGH, a pH value between 6.5-7.2 and temperatures of 22-28 °C.
The Golden Honey Gourami can be wellsocialized with peaceful, not too excited by-fish, such as characins , danios and also armored catfish . Well-reproducing dwarf shrimp species are also suitable, although it is possible that this partially hunting fish will catch one or two baby shrimp. The popular Amano shrimps are also suitable. Dwarf crayfish can nip the Golden Honey Gourami in the sensitive long abdominal filaments, and crayfish might even catch and eat them.
This carnivore feeds very well on commercial granular foods or flake foods for carnivorous fish. In its habitat, it feeds on insects and minute crustaceans. Occasional alternation with live or frozen foods such as cyclops, daphnia, white, black or red mosquito larvae, but also enchytrae or grindal worms will not be rejected by the Golden Honey Gourami.
Our food recommendation: With the NatureHolic BettaFeed a special food for fighting fish has been tailor-made. The soft granules are reminiscent of the consistency of insect larvae in nature. The soft beads protect the sensitive fish mouth from micro-cracks caused by too hard food granules. The specially developed NH Immun+ complex and the NH Color+ high-performance additive support the immune system and the magnificent color development of the fish.
Our plant recommendation: Use for the planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planaria and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
