from over 3,000 reviews "Cherax destructor originates from Australia. The species is quite common on the Fifth Continent, it is a popular edible crayfish. With a body length of 15 to 20 cm (measured without claws) the light blue, medium blue to dark blue yabby grows very large and develops an impressive appearance. The males in particular, with their beefy claws, look decidedly awe-inspiring. As they age, the crabs develop a white marble pattern on their claws. The males - unlike other Cherax species - do not have claw bladders. The sexes are therefore best distinguished by the sexual orifices. To do this, the animals must be turned on their backs. The gonopores in the female are located at the base of the second pair of walking legs, in the male at the base of the 5th or last pair of walking legs.
Despite its size and its name (destructor = destroyer) Cherax destructor is a quite peaceful crayfish, which can be kept without problems with dwarf shrimps. It can also be easily socialized with small fish without veil fins. The Blue Yabby is not an active hunter, but careless fish can be eaten. Snails are part of its natural diet, as are mollusks. As with all crayfish, we do not recommend socialization with crabs or other crustaceans. American crabs in particular potentially transmit the crayfish plague and therefore should not be allowed to have contact with blue yabbies under any circumstances. The spores of the pathogen are also in the water in which American crayfish are kept, so it must be ensured that no water with wet landing nets, plants etc. can get into the cherax aquarium either.
Like most Cherax species, the Blue Yabby is crepuscular to nocturnal, at least initially. Once it has become accustomed to the conditions in the aquarium, it is also active during the day. Please make sure that the aquarium has a gapless, well closing cover, which cannot be pushed open by the quite strong crayfish. Yabbys like to wander around and are amazingly agile climbers.
For the keeping of a pair an aquarium from 100 cm length is suitable. The setup should be very well structured and provide many caves and other hiding places. They are especially important during and after molting, while the crayfish are still soft they need protection. Cherax destructor also digs and attacks plants. Furnishings such as roots and stones must therefore be absolutely stable and secured against tipping over. Blue Yabbys like temperatures between 16 and 30 °C. Medium hard to hard water is well tolerated.
Female blue yabbys carry up to 400 eggs several times a year, which hatch into juvenile crayfish after about four weeks, depending on the temperature of the surrounding water, and remain on the mother's abdomen for one to three days after hatching. The young crayfish need many hiding places, ideally a layer of brown autumn leaves is suitable here, which is also eaten very gladly.
Besides foliage Cherax destructor also like to eat ready-made food, green food like vegetables, spinach and nettle (dried or scalded), but also flake food, food tabs or granules are taken very gladly.
Our food recommendation: Freshwater crayfish have a very varied diet in the wild. The Natureholic Crab Feed Sticks contain in a biologically balanced form only those ingredients that these crayfish in this or similar form to their natural food spectrum. This naturally supports and promotes moulting, growth and reproduction. Due to their protein content they are ideally suited for omnivorous crayfish of the genera Procambarus, Cambarus, Cambarellus, Astacus and the Cherax crayfish from Australia, which are basically omnivores that like to eat animal as well as vegetable food. The crayfish of the genus Cherax from Papua also like to eat a portion of animal food when they are young, but later they switch mainly to plant food.
Our plant recommendation: Use the following for planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
