The luminous eye danio or luminous eye rasbora was initially described as Rasbora dorsiocellata macrophthalma, but has since been moved to the newly created genus Brevibora. Therefore, the correct scientific name has recently become Brevibora dorsiocellata macrophthalma. Flare-eyed danios are found in the wild in the Malay Archipelago. This dwarf danio grows up to 3.5 cm, so it remains really small. It is a typical representative of the champagne-colored small fish, but is distinguished by a conspicuous black spot on the dorsal fin and the eponymous bright blue eyes. Males are distinguished from females by their slimmer body shape.
Although the luminous eye danio belongs to the nano fish, it is very fond of swimming and therefore needs a rectangular aquarium where it can make stretch. 54 liters is considered the minimum size for a group of 8-10 of these ornamental fish. As a schooling fish, the Light-eyed Dwarf Barbary should be kept in a group of 15 to 20 fish - then an aquarium with an edge length of 80 cm is certainly not wrong. A dense edge planting to hide and free space in the middle to accelerate is the optimum for this fish. If the light is dimmed somewhat by a blanket of floating plants and dark substrate, the fish will exhibit a metallic iridescence that looks particularly beautiful.
The small luminous eye danio likes water containing humic substances with a pH value of 5.5 to 7.5 and a low to medium water hardness. A socialization with shrimps is quite problem-free possible, because these pretty small Rasboras cannot handle them at all due to their mouth size. Possibly very small juvenile shrimps will be eaten, but larger crawlers have nothing to fear. The socialization of Rasbora dorsiocellata macrophthalma with dwarf shrimps usually does not go well. The nanofish are among the prey of crayfish and are gradually eaten. With keeping in a community tank with peaceful small to medium sized fish, the lighteye danio is very compatible.
The lighteye danio is an omnivore and will gladly take fine flake food or granulated food. Fine frozen foods and live foods such as rotifers, cyclops and artemia euplii, vinegar euplii and microworms are also good for the small mouths.
The breeding of the luminous eye danio is a bit more tricky. For this purpose it is best to start a pair in a breeding tank with soft, slightly acidic water and bring them into spawning mood with high quality live food. The addition of Humic substances is useful. Rasbora dorsiocellata macrophthalma are spawn predators and should therefore be removed from the breeding tank immediately after spawning. The initially still very small fish larvae need smallest live food like slipper fish. When they are a bit bigger, artemia euplii are also a good live food.
Our food recommendation: This NatureHolic Main Feed is a professional staple feed for all aquarium fish. We supply Hauptfeed in the form of soft granules, which, thanks to its grain size of half a millimeter, can be easily ingested by small to medium-sized fish. The soft consistency resembles the texture of insect larvae in nature and protects the fish mouth from micro-injuries.
Our plant recommendation: Use for planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free from algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
