Our Black Panda Guppy females belong to the really incredibly widespread guppy species Poecilia reticulata from South America. The black and white Black Panda Guppy females with the well-known dark pregnancy spot on the belly and the mysterious shimmering tail fins are a great eye-catcher. They grow to about 8-9 cm in length. You can recognize female Guppies by their roundish anal fin. In males it is pointed.
Poecilia reticulata is a live-bearing toothcarp, females do not lay eggs but give birth to up to 20 live young per litter. Although guppies do not spare their own young, in well-planted aquariums enough young will always survive.
Guppies deserve their name million fish: they are very eager to reproduce, assertive and robust - a perfect aquarium fish not only for beginners. Guppies are classics in the aquarium hobby, although the black and white Black Panda breeding form is not so old. Their reproductive joy is proverbial. Therefore, we recommend keeping Guppies in a male-only or female-only group to avoid unwanted offspring. Please note that female Guppies can store sperm during mating and may therefore give birth without a male
These female Black Panda Guppies can be kept together with other small, peaceful aquarium fish without any problems. Only with Endlers (Poecilia wingei) you should not keep Guppies, because they hybridize. With robust dwarf shrimps, which reproduce well, with Amano shrimps or with fan shrimps, guppies can be kept well in the aquarium. However, juvenile shrimp can be eaten if there are not enough hiding places and fine finned plants or moss cushions for the small dwarf shrimp.
The guppy's superior mouth reveals its food preferences - guppies like to forage on biofilms, scum, floating plant matter and approach foods from the water surface. Algae are also part of their natural diet, along with insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans. In the aquarium guppies like to pick at algae pads, they love live food, frozen food, soft vegetables or scalded green food like spinach or nettle. Special guppy food such as our NatureHolic Guppyfeed is just as suitable for feeding guppies in the aquarium as flake food or granulated food for omnivorous aquarium fish.
The colorful Poecilia reticulata live in nature in medium to hard water and also in slightly salty water in estuaries . In the aquarium guppies tolerate soft to hard water. A water temperature of 22-28 °C in the aquarium is considered ideal for guppies.
