Female Guppy Flame - Poecilia reticulata

The Flame variant of the Guppy also belongs to the species Poecilia reticulata. Originally, the Guppy comes from South America. In the aquarium hobby, the guppy, also called million fish, is widely known and very popular. There is almost no aquarist who has not had Guppies, and these pretty aquarium fish are considered ideal for beginners. Guppies are very well known for their strong desire to reproduce. Although Guppies are sociable fish, they do not miss anything when kept in unisexual groups.

The females of the Flame Guppies are also beautifully colored. However, they are slightly less intensely colored than the males. They have a golden-yellow overtone, and their caudal fin is yellow with a red rim. On the hind abdomen of female guppies is the so-called pregnancy spot. Female guppies grow larger than males, reaching a body length of about 9 cm.

As live-bearing toothcarps, female guppies give birth to live young every four weeks after mating - about 20 per litter. They can store sperm and give birth to offspring up to 11 times, even without having had contact with a male again .

Guppies interbreed with the very closely related Endler Guppies and the offspring are again fertile. These two Poecilia species should therefore not be socialized. Otherwise Flame Guppies fit very well in a community aquarium with other species with similar requirements. If you keep males and females of the Guppies, you have to expect a lot of offspring. Although guppies will also eat their own young, keeping them with another species of fish that will eat young guppies is not necessarily a bad idea. In well-planted aquariums, enough guppy babies will still come up. With dwarf shrimp species that reproduce well, but also with Amano shrimp or fan shrimp with similar demands on water hardness and temperature in the aquarium, a socialization can succeed. Crayfish, on the other hand, like to nip the curious guppies in the fins, injuring them if they don't eat them whole right away.

Flame Guppies are fish of the upper water layers, which in the biotope in nature like to feed on approach food on the water surface, but also eat insect larvae, algae cover or decomposing plant material. In the aquarium, the uncomplicated guppies are not fussy. In addition to commercial dry food (flakes or granules) they also like to eat special guppy food. They also like to remove algae deposits and they like frost food and live food as well as soft scalded green food or vegetables.

Poecilia reticulata lives in nature in habitats with rather hard or medium hard water and also in waters near the coast with light brackish water. In the aquarium they also prefer rather hard water and an aquarium temperature of 22-28 °C. A heater is not necessarily needed.
