The Golden Emperor T etra or Golden Emperor Tetra (Nematobrycon palmeri) comes from South American Colombia. Its specially shaped flag-like dorsal fin immediately catches the eye. With 4-5 cm this tetra remains relatively small. The Golden Emperor Tetra is colored similarly to the wild Emperor Tetra, but the pattern is covered by a golden sheen all over the body. It extends across the black broad longitudinal stripe that runs slightly below the center of the body and ends in a flag-like projection in the caudal fin of male emperor tetras. Females do not have this process. Above the black stripe, this beautiful ornamental fish is a bluish purple-gold color. This color transitions to a light golden olive brown on the back. The rest of the Golden Emperor Tetra's body is golden in color. The seam of the ventral fin has an even more intensely colored golden-yellow stripe. The long, high dorsal fin has a darker stripe in front, as do the lower and upper edges of the caudal fin.
The peaceful schooling fish Nematobrycon palmeri "gold" likes to live in a group of conspecifics. To a swarm this Tetra groups itself only with stress. We recommend a group size of 10 Golden Emperor Tetras - you can also combine these beautiful fish with other color varieties. Emperor tetras are great to watch and are very suitable for community aquariums.
Nematobrycon palmeri "gold" loves densely planted tanks with some swimming space. A dark substrate and a blanket of floating plants that dim the light somewhat are important. This is how these beautiful ornamental fish are at their most colorful. Too much light causes stress and the colors fade. Golden Emperor Tetras like soft to medium hard water and a temperature of about 23-27 °C.
Breeding needs some tact, but is possible. In a small aquarium a pair of Nematobrycon palmeri "gold" is set up for spawning. After successful egg laying you catch the parents again, so that they can not attack the spawn or the fish larvae. The Golden Emperor Tetra is a so-called free spawner. This tetra is bred in soft water with a pH-value between approx. 5,0 to 6,5 and a water temperature of approx. 25-27 °C. Also in the breeding aquarium a floating plant cover helps, which darkens the aquarium somewhat.
The young Golden Emperor tetras initially take very small live food like slipper lizards, rotifers and a little later also artemia euplii. Other fine live foods such as copepods or microworms are also well suited. Golden emperor tetras reproduce readily.
Being omnivorous, this tetra is happy with live or frozen foods. It also likes flake food or granulated food for the omnivorous aquarium fish.
Golden Emperor Tetras socialize well with other calm fish that are not too large. Shrimp babies may eventually be eaten, adult shrimp are too large for the golden emperor tetra. Nematobrycon palmeri "gold" can be kept well with shrimp that reproduce very well - Neocaridina or Sulawesi domestic shrimp, but also with larger shrimp such as Amano shrimp or fan shrimp, as well as with peaceful-minded dwarf crabs.
Our food recommendation: The NatureHolic main feed is a professional staple feed for all aquarium fish. Main feed we supply in the form of soft granules, which thanks to its grain size of half a millimeter can be easily absorbed by small to medium-sized fish. The soft consistency resembles the texture of insect larvae in nature and protects the fish mouth from micro-injuries.
Our plant recommendation: For planting, use NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
