from over 3,000 reviews "Live food - Buffalo worms - vers. Sizes
Buffalo worms are the larvae of the glossy black grain mold beetle (Alphitobius diaperinus), which belongs to the black beetles. This black beetle is native all over the world - only 6 mm in size, it is a storage pest that eats flour and grain products. You can find the beetles in bakeries and kitchens, as well as in granaries, in the nests of birds and rodents, and on poultry farms. Buffalo worms themselves grow to be 12 to 15 mm long.
Buffalo worms are slightly softer than mealworms and are readily eaten. Their nutritional values on average are:
- Crude protein: approx. 53%
- Crude fat: approx. 33
- Crude ash: approx. 3%
- Crude fiber: approx. 6%
Buffalo worms are kept at 20 °C, they do not like cold temperatures. Before feeding, it is advisable to condition or enrich buffalo worms. This makes them richer in vitamins and minerals and makes them even more valuable as live food.
For enrichment, place the buffalo worms in a Faunabox with slits in the lid. This allows excess moisture to escape, which could otherwise lead to ammonia formation and render the worms useless. Make sure that the buffalo worms in the Faunabox do not lie in several layers on top of each other. You can avoid this by placing egg cartons in the Faunabox - this way the worms have more space.
Wheat bran is a good substrate for the buffalo worms in the Faunabox. A mixture of flour, oatmeal and sawdust in equal parts is also suitable. Calculate 250 g of buffalo worms to 250 ml of wheat bran.
Buffalo worms like to eat dry bread, toast or rolls. Some fruit or vegetables will add vitamins and minerals that will enrich the buffalo worms. Change the fresh food daily to prevent mold from spreading in your buffalo worm culture.
When the buffalo worms pupate after some time, the soft white pupae are still great to feed!
