The mandarin shr imp is also called Sunkist Shrimp or orange dwarf shrimp. It used to be called Caridian cf. propinqua, but now it has been found that it belongs to the species Caridina thambipillai. It stands out in any aquarium because of its bright orange coloration that covers the entire body. Sometimes the mandarin shrimp has an additional darker dot and stripe pattern. However, it can also have a brownish transparent appearance depending on its mood. The females grow to 4 centimeters, which is above average for a dwarf shrimp, while the males remain somewhat smaller and thinner.
In the attitude the orange dwarf shrimp is extremely uncomplicated. It feeds mainly on algae and thus keeps the aquarium clean, but it also takes special shrimp food very gladly. Regular gifts of a suitable protein food are very welcome, as is the use of brown autumn leaves as a permanent food.
At the same time, the tangerine shrimp is very peaceful, so there will be no problems with other aquarium inhabitants, provided they are also not predatory, nor too curious and restless. The tangerine shrimp does not interbreed with any other shrimp species in the hobby.
The breeding of the tangerine shrimp is quite complex. The female carries a lot of tiny little eggs, from which larvae hatch after the end of the gestation period. For their breeding brackish water and special food is needed, it can be compared to the Amana shrimp. The young animals are usually not color-fast, but become rather brownish.
