Origin: | Australia |
Genus: | Marsilea |
The cloverleaf Marsilea hirsuta comes to us from Australia. It has proven to be a perfect ground cover for aquascapes and planted aquariums. The cloverleaf belongs to the clover ferns. These marsh plants get their name from their emersed leaves, which look deceptively similar to four-leaf clovers. The submerged form, on the other hand, does not look like lucky clover, but has a roundish dark green single leaf on a short stem. These leaves sit on underground stolons.
Marsilea hirsuta grows into dense carpets that are only 1-2 cm high, making them super fit in the foreground of nanoaquariums.
Marsilea hirsuta - unlike Glossostigma - copes very well with medium light. Under weaker light the plants sprout long stemmed four leaf clover shaped leaves. They can easily be cut off. CO2 fertilization is not essential for the successful care of Marsilea hirsuta, but it can promote growth and support a compact growth habit.
With a good supply of nutrients, this relatively undemanding clover grows quite quickly. The aquarium groundcover spreads nicely over the area via underground runners. Marsilea can be ideally used to keep backfilled slopes in the aquascape from slipping, as the green dense plant carpets hold the soil in place.
Under plenty of light, Marsilea hirsuta grows very low and compact. Every now and then, the plant mats should then be thinned out to keep them looking respectable. To do this, simply carefully pluck individual runners from the plant mats and cut them off with sharp scissors .
You can then use these severed runners right away to propagate the shamrock. Marsilea hirsuta will sprout again well if you simply place 2-4 cm long pieces of each runner in the ground.
This Marsilea comes from a plant technology laboratory where it was grown in meristem culture inVitro in a cup. InVitro plants do not require quarantine, you can easily plant them in your aquarium without pre-watering. The cloverleaf from InVitro culture does not bring pathogens, algae, parasites or annoying co-inhabitants such as snails, it is guaranteed unsprayed. Only the transparent culture medium should be washed from the roots before the plants enter the aquarium.
The cloverleaf also does well above water in damp terrariums or in a waterfall aquarium or wabi kusa - then it sprouts the four-leaf attractive lucky clovers from which it takes its name. In shallow water, the plant develops floating leaves.
Our recommendation: For a splendid plant growth we recommend the use of the NatureHolic fertilizer series and for new set up the Premium Nutrient Substrate NatureHolic GroundBooster.
