from over 3,000 reviews "The Red Papuan Crayfish Cherax boesemani is also known as the Red Brick. It displays predominantly red and orange hues, paired with some beige, cream, dark blue-black, purple and white. This very attractive crayfish comes from Papua/Indonesia, where it can be found in flowing waters as well as in lakes. It reaches a body length between 10 and 15 cm without claws. Male sexually mature Red Papua Crayfish have bright claw blisters on the outside of their claws and have their gonopores (the two sexual openings) at the base of the 5th pair of walking legs, while female Red Brick have no claw blisters. Their gonopores are located at the origin of the third pair of legs.
These quite compatible, colorful, and variable crayfish are extremely aquarium compatible. A pair needs an aquarium from 80 cm edge length, which you should give a good structure with stones and roots, so that the crayfish can avoid each other e.g. after a moult. Also caves from coconut halves or clay are gladly accepted. The Red Brick digs actively, so aquarium decorations should be secured against tipping over when burrowed under. Plants are hardly eaten, only plants with very soft foliage like Pogostemon helferi could be attacked by the Red Papua Crab. Therefore, hard-leaved species such as Congo fern or Anubias should be chosen for planting; fast-growing species (waterweed, nixwort and hornwort) are also suitable. The aquarium must be covered absolutely tightly (stuff slots and holes with filter wadding), Red Papuan Crayfish are good climbers and escape artists!
As a pronounced omnivore Cherax boesemani does not only take vegetable food (green food, not sprayed vegetables, brown autumn leaves - which belongs as permanent food in every aquarium with invertebrates) but also animal food like frozen food, raw unseasoned fish etc. as well as food granules, pellet food or flake food. Of course, it is especially fond of food specially designed for crayfish.
The Red Brick is peaceful and very compatible within the species. It is mainly active at dusk and at night. Once it has settled in, it can also be observed in the aquarium during the day. Fish may be hunted; however, it can be well socialized with medium sized fish that predominantly inhabit the upper water layers and do not sleep on the bottom. Sick fish are caught and eaten, so the Red Papuan Crayfish acts as the health police in the aquarium.
Please do not allow the Cherax boesemani "Red Brick" to come into contact with crayfish from the Americas, including water containing such crayfish. It has no resistance to the pathogens of crayfish plague that may be transmitted by these crayfish, and the disease inevitably leads to death in all Cherax species. The red papua crayfish is not compatible with crayfish of other species or with crabs. It should also not be kept with fan shrimp or longarm shrimp, but it is very compatible with dwarf shrimp - provided the water values match. Snails are eaten - as in the habitat - they are part of the natural diet of the Red Papua Crab.
Cherax boesemani likes soft to medium hard, oxygen rich water with a GH above 6 and a pH between 6 and 7.5. It should not be too cool, temperatures below 20 °C should be avoided. Upwards at 28 °C the end of the comfort range is reached.
After mating, the female Red Papua Crab attaches about 60 to 80 eggs to the abdomen and carries them there until hatching seven to nine weeks later. Even after hatching, the small crayfish remain there for some time before finally becoming self-sufficient and going their own ways. Red Brick offspring need plenty of hiding places, as the baby crabs are cannibalistic among themselves. They grow relatively slowly.
Our food recommendation: Freshwater crayfish have a very varied diet in the wild. The Natureholic Crab Feed Sticks contain in a biologically balanced form only those ingredients that these crayfish in this or similar form to their natural food spectrum. This naturally supports and promotes moulting, growth and reproduction. Due to their protein content they are ideally suited for omnivorous crayfish of the genera Procambarus, Cambarus, Cambarellus, Astacus and the Cherax crayfish from Australia, which are basically omnivores that like to eat animal as well as vegetable food. The crayfish of the genus Cherax from Papua also like to eat a portion of animal food when they are young, but later they switch mainly to plant food.
Our plant recommendation: Use for planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
