The maximum 2.5 cm long Dwarf Bluefish or Red Scarlet (Dario dario) from India is an interesting fish for nano aquariums from 54 liters. Especially the dominant males are beautiful, they have bright red horizontal stripes on a silver-blue ground. The fins are scarlet with blue to turquoise markings, the fin rays of the pectoral fin are elongated. Females of Dario dario are more subdued in color, usually plain gray, often with darker stripes. The fin rays of their pectoral fin are not elongated, unlike in male Dario dario. Often subdominant males also show this coloration, so you can't always necessarily tell the sexes apart at first glance. Sometimes subdominant males have reddish color stripes, which are always absent in females.
The Dwarf Bluefish or Red Scarlet Dwarf Perch originates from India, where it is found in the northeast in slow-moving rivers and ponds with clear and slightly acidic water and sandy bottoms. There it lives in the dense vegetation under water.
Dario dario is a peaceful dwarf perch, which however forms territories and claims them for itself. The animals should be kept in sufficiently large aquariums (from 54 liters) in a group of 8-10 animals with a surplus of females. The aquarium should be planted very well and have structure by stones and roots, so that the territorial males are not exposed to excessive stress and can optically avoid each other.
Breeding of Dario dario should be done in a well established rearing aquarium planted with fine-feathered plants, because the parents will chase their young. To start them off, feed the dwarf bluefish richly, preferably with live food or high-quality frozen food. Soon the males show their impressive courtship dances with imponier behavior worth seeing. Soft and slightly acidic water with a pH of 6.0 to 7 and a water temperature of 16-26 °C supports reproduction. Female Dario dario lay their eggs in the plants, the male protects the clutch. However, hatched fry are not cared for further, the parent fish should then also be caught out.
At first the young fish stay on the bottom, only after 2-3 days they start to swim freely. The young Dwarf Bluefish are raised with Artemia euplii and other fine live food.
After acclimation the Red Scarlet can be kept in rather hard water, from soft to hard, much is tolerated. The pH should be in the range of 6 to 8,5, the water temperature at about 19-29 °C. Optimal are 16-26 °C. In nature the water temperature in the biotopes varies sometimes strongly, also in the aquarium one should not always aim at the same temperature.
The dwarf bluefish is a carnivore. Fine Live food is a must. You can also accustom them to frozen food. Their small size should be kept in mind when choosing food.
With its small mouth the Dwarf Bluefish is not a serious enemy for larger shrimps, however small juvenile shrimps definitely belong to its food spectrum. The pretty little fish can be socialized with fish of similar size and with similar requirements, but in a species aquarium they show their full fascination. The rather bottom-oriented bluefish should not be socialized with dwarf crayfish and large crayfish.
Our food recommendation: This NatureHolic main feed is a professional main feed for all aquarium fish. Main feed we supply in the form of soft granules, which thanks to its grain size of half a millimeter can be easily absorbed by small to medium-sized fish. The soft consistency resembles the texture of insect larvae in nature and protects the fish mouth from micro-injuries.
Our plant recommendation: Use for planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free from algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
