The absolute classic among ground covers in the foreground of the aquarium, made famous by Takashi Amano, is pond liverwort (Riccia fluitans). Actually a rootless floating plant, this beautifully finely textured light green moss can be tied onto flat stones for use as a ground cover in the foreground. It also makes a really nice light accent in the middle ground when glued or tied onto roots or aquarium rocks.
Since Riccia does not form adhesive organs, the cushions must be cut back and re-bound from time to time. This also makes them branch out very nicely. This is also how this great aquarium plant is propagated: Simply divide the cushions or leave some shoots when pruning and reattach them.
Of course, you can also use Riccia "as in the past" traditionally as a floating plant. It shades the water surface nicely and provides great hiding places for young fish. Also fighting fish and gouramis like to use the floating plant cushions as a base for their foam nests.
This lab-grown pond liverwort is guaranteed to be free of pesticides as well as unwanted stowaways such as snails, worms, hydras or microcrayfish. Carefully wash the transparent culture medium under running water and then place the Riccia in your aquarium - quarantine is not required.
Our recommendation: For a splendid plant growth we recommend the use of the NatureHolic fertilizer series and for new plants the Premium Nutrient Substrate NatureHolic GroundBooster.
Expert Tip: With the NatureHolic plant glue glue this plant gently and easily on stones, roots and decoration . Made in Germany, the adhesive does not pollute the water and has no negative impact on the stock.
