The Rio Negro Catfish, also known by its scientific name Corydoras kanei, is a peaceful freshwater fish native to South America. Especially in the Rio Negro Basin in Brazil, this catfish is widely distributed. It belongs to the armored and callus catfish family and can be easily identified by its silvery body coloration, dark spots and lines, and high-backed dorsal fin and bony plates.
To be comfortable in an aquarium, the Rio Negro Catfish requires a tank with an edge length of at least 80 cm, as it reaches a maximum size of 5 cm. It is important that it always has free access to the water surface, as it is an intestinal breather and absorbs oxygen through the surface. The aquarium should also be equipped with a sandy substrate and various hiding places such as caves, tubes, aquarium plants, roots, wooden or stone structures.
The Rio Negro Catfish is a friendly and peaceful inhabitant of a community aquarium and should be kept in a group of at least 5 conspecifics. Socialization with other smaller or equally sized freshwater fish is also possible.
Regarding the water values in the aquarium Corydoras kanei has no special requirements. The optimal water temperature is between 22 and 26 degrees Celsius, and the pH should be between 5.5 and 7.5.
As far as diet is concerned, Corydoras kanei is uncomplicated and readily accepts various types of food, such as frozen food, live food or catfish tablets.
Breeding Corydoras kanei in the aquarium is easy and does not require much effort. These catfish are substrate spawners and glue their eggs to plants, sides or the aquarium glass. A clutch can contain up to 100 eggs, and the young hatch after a few days.
Our food recommendation: The NatureHolic Main Feed is a professional staple food for all aquarium fish. We supply Hauptfeed in the form of soft granules, which, thanks to its grain size of half a millimeter, can be easily ingested by small to medium-sized fish. The soft consistency resembles the texture of insect larvae in nature and protects the fish mouth from micro-injuries.
Our plant recommendation: Use for planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend when keeping fish the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
