The native duckweed, also known as duckweed, with scientific name Lemna minor, is an extremely persistent and undemanding floating plant for aquarium and pond, which multiplies rapidly under good conditions.
Thanks to its rapid population growth, duckweed is highly effective at absorbing organic pollutants such as nitrate and phosphate, thus removing them from the water. This prevents algae plagues in a completely natural way.
The dense carpet that duckweed can form on the water surface effectively shades the aquarium, which is beneficial for more shy inhabitants. Labyrith fish that build foam nests, such as fighting fish, find ideal conditions for their nests here.
Duckweed is also an excellent food plant for goldfish and other carp fish, for turtles and also for plant-eating snails such as the paradise snail Marisa cornuarietis.
Baby shrimp as well as fish larvae find good hiding places in the dense, filamentous short roots. Even adult shrimp like to sit at the bottom of the duckweed and pick up food particles from the water surface from there.
Please note that duckweed is very assertive and once it has gained a foothold, it is difficult to banish it from the aquarium.
