Blue Diamond Shrimp - Neocaridina davidi
With its almost jelly-like appearance, the Blue Diamond shrimp is a really cool eye-catcher in your aquarium. It is also a color variation of the popular Neocardina davidii, which once came from Asia. Both sexes appear midnight blue, even their legs are colored. On the forebody it can also form great dark blue spots. Because it is quite easy to keep it is also suitable for beginners.
You can keep it in soft to hard water, because it tolerates quite a high range, also in its habitats it can be found in different areas. But for a long term keeping we recommend to use humic preparations like our Crusta Humin or always offer brown autumn leaves.
The sexes can be easily distinguished by their size, because the females are a bit more bulky and larger than the males and reach sizes of up to 3.5 cm in some places. If your darlings feel well, they reproduce regularly every 6 weeks or so. The female then carries between 20 and 40 quite large eggs under her belly, from which hatch fully developed young, which are a miniature version of their parents and feed independently. With increasing age, the animals color through more and more. Initially they still hide in layers of mulm and foliage in the aquarium and hardly move from the place of their hatching. You can then offer them our BabyFeed, because this reaches every shrimp in their hiding place.
You can also socialize the Blue Diamond with other shrimps or snails and even peaceful fish. But keep in mind that it can crossbreed with other Neocaridina species and this can result in new colors. To keep the blue color you should keep them in a species tank and sort them out consequently.
Keep the pretty Blue Diamond from 20 liters and make sure to offer it company with its own kind. You can use a water-neutral substrate to make her feel comfortable. With caves and tubes you offer her important retreats for her moult. She will also happily accept dense stands of plants and fine mosses.
The omnivorous Blue Diamond can easily be fed with shrimp food, it also likes to feed on algae. Make sure that their food is mainly plant-based, especially brown foliage has proven to be a permanent food and hiding place in the shrimp aquarium. With our MainFeed the animals are well supplied, but twice a week they should be fed with a high quality protein food Protein food should be offered to them.
