The Chocolate Sakura is also a dwarf shrimp, more precisely, a backstroke shrimp. Its scientific name is Neocaridina davidi "Chocolate". The backstroke shrimp is native to many parts of Asia. However, the Chocolate Sakura is a pure breeding form, it does not occur in the wild.

More and more aquarists are enthusiastic about the Chocolate Sakura shrimp. Their basic color is not as striking as the red of a Red Sakura, nevertheless this dwarf shrimp species is an optical highlight in the aquarium. The reason for this is not only the opaque chocolate brown color, which can range from full milk to bittersweet, but also the shiny carapace surface. The brown color pattern is usually somewhat paler in males than in females. Some females have a lighter dorsal stripe. It is also remarkable that mostly all animals, no matter if male or female, show a very pale coloration after molting. Only after a few days the strong brown color develops again. The chocolate sakura reaches a size of up to three centimeters. The females are often somewhat larger than the males.

Chocolate Sakura shrimp are omnivores. Almost any food is gladly accepted. Nevertheless, one should always pay attention to a varied, predominantly vegetable diet. Twice a week they should be fed with a suitable protein food . Especially during molting it is important that the animals are optimally supplied. Dwarf shrimp food covers the needs of the chocolate Sakura shrimp very well, but also animal food such as larvae or insects are gladly accepted, as well as brown autumn leaves, green food and algae leaves0.

Basically the Neocaridina davidi "Chocolate" is a quite undemanding shrimp species. Nevertheless, it prefers tanks with a nice planting, because here it finds sufficient hiding places. Chocolate Sakura shrimp can be easily socialized with other dwarf shrimp and are very peaceful animals. If you put them together with other shrimp of the species Neocaridina davidi, mixing and different colored animals in the offspring can occur. If one wants to socialize them with other shrimps, one should consider the requirements to the water values. Also with fish these chocolate brown dwarf shrimps can be well socialized, as long as these are peaceful and do not chase them. They can also be kept together with crayfish, freshwater crabs, snails and mussels without any problems.

The chocolate sakura shrimp is very easy to breed. The females release 20 to 40 fully developed juveniles after three to four weeks of gestation, and they are immediately on their own in the aquarium. The adults do not chase the baby shrimp.
