Our Endler Japan Blue belong to the species Poecilia wingei, the South American Endler Guppy. Although these livebearers are a separate species (first described in 2005), they are closely related to the Guppy (Poecilia reticulata) and can interbreed with it, producing fertile hybrids. Guppies and Endlers should therefore not be kept together.
In terms of size and behavior towards offspring, Endlers and Guppies show distinct differences. Endlers remain much smaller at only 2 cm in length for males and 3.5-4 cm in length for females, and they generally do not eat their offspring, unlike guppies. The courtship behavior of male Endler Guppies is also really interesting.
The coloration of the Japan Blue mix Endler male is still quite close to the wild form - these fish also still have black and red spots, but the blue portion takes up a much larger area. Females are usually solid silvery to gray and have a black gestation patch at the rear of their abdomen.
As live-bearing toothcarps, female Endler Guppies give birth to their young alive, developing in the egg in their body and hatching just before or right at spawning. A female can give birth to 10-25 baby fish every 4-6 weeks. Since Japan Blue mix Endlers do not eat their offspring , they usually all make it, unless there are by-fish such as small tetras in the aquarium to take care of excess juvenile guppies. Endler females can continue to give birth to offspring for several months, as they can store the semen of the males.
Japan Blue Endler Guppies tend to be surface oriented and will readily eat away any scum that may be present from the water surface or eat approach food with their overhead mouths. They also pluck at algae and eat rotting plant parts. Special guppy food is well suited for feeding in the aquarium, supplemented with scalded soft vegetables or greens, as well as frozen food and live food.
Japan Blue Endler Guppies live in rather loosely placed groups, they do not have strong schooling behavior, but like the presence of conspecifics because it gives them security. Japan Blue mix Endlers prefer rather medium to hard water and can even tolerate slightly brackish water. An aquarium water temperature of 22-28 °C is optimal for Poecilia wingei.
The socialization of Japan Blue Endler Guppies with robust or very prolific shrimps like Amano shrimps, Sulawesi domestic shrimps or Neocaridina works quite well, even if small shrimp babies are eaten from time to time. If there are enough hiding places and fine finned plants or mosses in the aquarium, enough shrimp will get through. Since Endler Guppies tend to sleep on the bottom, they can become prey for crayfish. Socialization with small to medium sized or very peaceful large ornamental fish in the aquarium, on the other hand, works quite well.
Our food recommendation: The fragrant NatureHolic Guppyfeed was tailor-made for the requirements of guppies and other viviparous fish in the aquarium. In addition to high-quality animal-based ingredients, it also contains plant-based components that benefit guppies & co. The soft granules protect the sensitive mouth of viviparous from injuries caused by hard food grains and provide the fish with a natural feeding experience.
Our plant recommendation: For planting, use NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend when keeping fish the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
