Taiwanese Nöppi Tower Ceiling Snail - Melanoides sp.

The Genoppte Turmdeckelschnecke Tarebia granifera was affectionately christened Nöppi. It belongs to the family of the Thiaridae. The XXL Nöppi offered here grows up to 2 cm and comes from Taiwan. It concerns with these particularly beautiful animals a first import! Their elongated light brown to reddish brown shell has a thick shell and a beautiful, striking nubby sculpturing, the opening is closed with a well closing lid, the operculum.

Tarebia granifera is separately sexed, but even in the XXL neppi one finds practically exclusively females. The neppi is viviparous, that is, its eggs develop in its brood sac, and only the hatched young are released. Tarebia granifera reproduce by virgin reproduction. The female clones herself, so to speak, and thus produces exclusively genetic twins - the characteristics of this beautiful snail are thus passed on 1:1 to the offspring. The breeding of the XXL Nöppi is very unproblematic. If the food supply is abundant, the Genoppte Turmdeckelschnecke multiplies extremely well.

Tarebia granifera does not need to be fed separately, the XXL Nöppis take care of the leftovers in the aquarium, uneaten food, dead plants, algae deposits, biofilms, ... They do not nibble on living plants.

But not only as a cleanup troop Tarebia makes itself useful. The XXL Nöppi digs all day long in the substrate for food and thus ensures that rotting and rotting can not even arise, keeps the soil loose and brings nutrients to the plant roots. It thus fulfills the same role that earthworms fill in the flower bed. During the day, the XXL Nöppi can therefore rarely be seen - it lives in the substrate. Even a high population density is thus very inconspicuous. At darkness they come out of the ground, then you can also observe them at the aquarium glass.
If you see a mass migration of the XXL Nöppi upwards, this is a sign for oxygen deficiency and therefore for bad water values. This makes them a reliable indicator of water quality in the aquarium.

Thanks to its fairly hidden lifestyle and very good reproduction, the XXL Nöppi can be socialized with all other aquarium inhabitants, even keeping a basic population with snail eaters.
