The beautiful floating plant Pistia stratiotes, also called shell flower because of the distinctive shape of its leaves, belongs to the arum family (Araceae). In nature it is found practically worldwide: there are occurrences in America and Southern Europe, in Asia and Africa. Shellflower is a free-drifting floating plant with long, branched pale root beards and gray-green downy hairy overwater leaves. It grows rosette-shaped and can reach 10-15 cm in diameter. Under bright lighting, the leaves grow 5-7 cm in height. The densely branched, long hanging roots are idealfor shrimp and small fish to hidein.
Thanks to its rapid growth, the mussel flower ensures that algae cannot use excess nutrients, thus preventing algae plagues effectively and in a completely natural way. Conchflowers can be used to provide cover for shy animals such as crayfish, shrimp and some fish, and to provide some shade to parts of the aquarium. The density of the cover is very easy to correct and control thanks to the size of the plants.
The conch flower does not like condensation dripping from the top, but is otherwise a fairly hardy floating plant. In open aquariums and, in summer, in garden ponds, dense carpets of shellflower spread in a short time under good conditions. Pistia stratiotes makes no demands on water values and is very adaptable. Temperatures of 10-28 °C are well tolerated.
The mussel flower reproduces by means of children - daughter plants, which sit on short light green stems, which spring from the leaf rosette. If you want to propagate the mussel flower specifically, you simply separate these daughter plants and let them grow separately.
