Princess Bee Shrimp - Princess Shrimp - Caridina haivanensis

Originally from Hai Van Pass (Cloud Pass) in Vietnam, the freshwater shrimp Caridina haivanensis, the Princess Bee shrimp, was formerly called Paracaridina sp., but has since been accurately identified. It is particularly pretty with its black and white pattern, but there are also animals that go somewhat into the reddish. The females grow with 3,5 cm very big for a dwarf shrimp, the males are smaller and narrower.

The Princess Bee needs soft water with a KH of 0 to 3, a pH between 5,5 and 7,5 and a GH of up to 8. The water temperature should not exceed 25 °C. In many cases tap water is not well suited for keeping or even breeding the Princess Shrimp. Bee salt and osmosis water are then a good alternative, ideally in combination with an active Soil, which adjusts the water values to the needs of this soft water shrimp.

With the right water temperature and the appropriate water values, the female carries about 20 to 40 eggs, from which after about 4 weeks independently living young are released into the water. The small shrimps like to hide in the moss for the first time and feed on microorganisms, algae growth and detritus.

Nothing stands in the way of a socialization with peaceful snails and other dwarf shrimps, if the water values, which the animals need, match. About a possible crossability with other dwarf shrimps nothing is known so far. A socialization with fish is also rather no problem, provided that the co-inhabitants are peaceful and not too curious. Due to the rarity of the Princess Bee we advise here nevertheless rather to a species tank.

The preferred food of the Princess Shrimp consists of mainly vegetable components. Twice a week it should nevertheless be provided with a high quality protein food, which covers its protein requirements. Brown autumn leaves such as oak and beech leaves are also very suitable as shrimp food.
