Previously, the Red Tiger Shrimp - Orange Eye was referred to as Caridina cantonensis cf. "Red Tiger", but it is now known that the Tiger Shrimp is a distinct species. It was described as Caridina mariae in 2014. The Red Tiger Shrimp - Orange Eye is a color form of the wild colored tiger shrimp with black or dark brown stripes and is also found this way in nature. The females become relatively large with approx. 3 cm, the males remain somewhat smaller and do not become as chubby as the females. The red tiger shrimp is transparent to light yellow-orange and has bright red tiger stripes. In addition to the red color form, which originated in the wild, there is another red color form that was created by crossbreeding with red bee shrimp. Both variants are hereditary.
Red tiger shrimp reproduce quite well under good conditions. Females carry their eggs under their abdomen for about three to four weeks, and after this gestation period they release between 20 and 40 young, which immediately become independent and do not require brood care. The older animals hardly ever chase the offspring.
The red tiger shrimp feels comfortable as a group animal in company. If you want tosocialize them with other shrimps , you should make sure that the demands on the water values do not diverge. Often the red tiger shrimp is specifically mated with bee shrimp, because the hybrids from these mixtures show attractive colors and patterns. Red tiger shrimp can also be easily socialized with small, peaceful fish and with snails.
Red tiger shrimp prefer rather soft, possibly even slightly acidic water. A little carbonate hardness (KH) of about 3 to 4 degrees may be present. If the tap water does not match the values, you can create the ideal water values with osmosis water and a special hardening salt (GH/KH+). Temperatures above 25 °C do not tolerate red tiger shrimp very well, therefore cooling may be necessary in summer.
As far as food is concerned, the Red Tiger Shrimp is not particularly picky as an omnivore. It likes shrimp food specially adapted to its needs, but also frozen food and green food such as spinach or nettle. She is grateful for a protein food 2x per week, otherwise the red tiger shrimp likes to eat food of mainly vegetable origin. Brown autumn leaves are a very suitable permanent food in any invertebrate aquarium.
