Thunderbolt snail - Tylomelania perfecta

The Thunderbolt Snail Tylomelania perfecta comes to us from a very calcareous water on Sulawesi, where the water is so hard that the lime precipitates and not only forms beautiful calcareous terraces, but also covers everything in the water with a layer of lime - so also the shell of the Thunderbolt Tylomelania. In the aquarium the shell continues to grow without the calcareous layer and is then light brown to dark brown and very beautifully sculpted. The juveniles of Tylomelania perfecta also naturally do not have a calcareous layer anymore. The body of this unusual snail is almost black and has a fine light grain. The shell of Tylomelania perfecta grows up to 7 cm long.

Tylomelania perfecta comes from rivers and is therefore very adaptable concerning the water values. Medium to hard water and temperatures from 21 to 28 °C are good for them. As a snail that lives mainly on hard substrate , the thunderbolt snail needs hard surfaces in the aquarium such as wood or stones, which it continuously grazes for algae cover. The size of the animals makes an aquarium from 60 cm edge length for a small group of five animals recommendable.

The thunderbolt snail is an extremely peaceful aquarium inhabitant, which can live together with dwarf shrimps, other peaceful snails and also with peaceful, not too intrusive fish without any problems. Curious fish (e.g. guppies) that nibble on snail antennae are not suitable aquarium company for the relatively stress-sensitive thunderbolt snail.

The thunderbolt snail likes to graze algae growth and biofilms from hard surfaces, helping to keep the aquarium clean. It also likes to eat scalded vegetables, frozen food, flake food and special snail food, and food tablets are also welcome. It especially likes to eat brown autumn leaves and dried green walnut leaves.

The thunderbolt snail is not difficult to breed. Tylomelania perfecta, like all snails from the genus Tylomelania , is unisexual and gives birth to live young, which develop in the brood pouch of the female. Unfortunately, it is not possible to tell the sexes in the thunderbolt snail, so we recommend a group of at least five animals to increase the likelihood that there really are males and females.
