This black tiger shrimp OE as a high breeding of the species Caridina mariae has beautiful orange eyes, which form a great contrast to the black color - for them stands the abbreviation OE (orange eyes). This high breeding form of the tiger shrimp grows to about 2-3 cm in size. Female Black Tiger OE are larger than the males and become much rounder. In the pattern of the Black Tiger Shrimp OE the black stripes of Caridina mariae are strongly broadened, so that they abut each other and cover the whole body. Here you get almost completely covering Black Tiger Shrimp OE, which correspond to the tiger shrimp grades BT0 to BT2. Females may develop a rusty red tinge on the back. This coloration is of natural origin and occurs primarily in older adult females.
A 10 shrimp group of Black Tiger Shrimp OE can be kept in aquariums as small as 20 liters, although we are happy to recommend larger tanks, especially for beginners in keeping high breeding shrimp. Black Tiger Shrimp OE are sensitive to high germ loads in the aquarium water and absolutely need a good water quality. They prefer rather soft and cool, very oxygen-rich and germ-poor water and a low carbonate hardness of 0 to maximum 4 °dKH. With osmosis water and a hardening salt (GH+) for soft water shrimp you are on the safe side, keeping on active Soil is possible, but not a must for the Black Tiger OE. The tiger shrimp originates from cool streams in the subtropics and therefore does not tolerate too high temperatures in the aquarium. Especially in summer you should think about an aquarium cooling if necessary, so that the water does not get warmer than approx. 25 °C.
The Black Tiger Shrimp OE is quite easy to breed if its water quality requirements are met. The Black Tiger OE inherits its opaque black color as well as the eye color recessively, which should be considered in breeding projects with other tiger shrimp, bee shrimp, Caridina cantonensis and co. A female black tiger shrimp OE releases about 20 to 40 young shrimp every 5 to 6 weeks. She carries the eggs under her abdomen, where she patiently and carefully sorts them until they hatch and fans them with oxygen-rich water. The older shrimp usually do not chase the tiger offspring, so an extra rearing tank is not necessary for the babies. The young hatch in the form of fully developed miniature shrimp. depending on the outside temperature, this takes three to five weeks.
Black tiger shrimp OE are uncomplicated to feed omnivores, but they need mainly vegetable food. They very much like a shrimp food specially adapted to their needs. Basically, protein food containing more protein should only be fed 2x a week, otherwise the menu of the Black Tiger Shrimp OE contains mainly vegetable food: brown autumn leaves as permanent food, which does not pollute the water values, spinach, nettle, Hokkaido pumpkin and much more.
Socialization of the Black Tiger Shrimp OE is possible in the aquarium - snails that tolerate soft water, small peaceful catfish or danios like Boraras are also good aquarium mates. However, Black Tiger OE do not reproduce as much as other shrimp for the aquarium, so keeping them in a species tank is best. If you want to keep Black Tiger OE with fish, there must be many hiding places in the aquarium in the form of dense plants, moss cushions or clay caves. In the hiding places, freshly skinned shrimp will find shelter and a place to hide.
If the Black Tiger Shrimp OE is to be kept in a tank with other dwarf shrimp, the species should be chosen so that they cannot cross - unless, of course, you deliberately want to cross the Black Tiger OE into another strain in order to get into hybrid breeding with tiger bees.
