Spiked tower snail - Thiara winteri

Thespiny tower snail, Thiari winteri, originates from Asia and belongs to the Thiaridae. Its beautiful shell is gray-brown to almost black and has conspicuous grooves with distinct projections that resemble spines. With just 2 centimeters this species remains quite small and is a useful bottom dweller, which scours the gravel for food and enriches  with their excretions at the same time. Externally, it is difficult to distinguish the sexes, yet these snails reproduce viviparously and also quite well when they are comfortable.

Spiked cap snails are very peaceful and robust, which digs diligently en whole day through the substrate and eats food remains, but also dead plant parts and mulm. They also like to eat brown Autumn leavesbut also eats algae coverings, special Snail food and is particularly happy about scalded vegetables, like for example Hokkaido, Zucchini and Peppers but also Nettle.

Thiara winteri can be kept very well together with shrimps, peaceful fish and other peaceful snails in the aquarium.

To its water parameters, the spiked trumpet snail does not have very high requirements. The pH-value should be 7 to 8,5, the KH over 3, a GH up to 25 is tolerated very well. Temperatures of 22 to 26 °C are optimal.
