They grow slowly, they look unusual and attractive with their moss-green velvety surface, and they are a great decoration for the foreground or middle ground of an aquarium: moss balls are not actually made of moss at all, but of the short-filament green alga Aegagropila linnaei, but the name has become common.
In nature, these balls of algae are gently rolled back and forth by the crashing waves of the surf, giving them their spherical shape. Moss balls can reach up to 12 inches in diameter. Moss balls are simply placed on the substrate. They should be turned regularly so that they continue to grow round and remain uniformly green.
Useful bacteria settle on the huge surface formed by the short filaments and ensure good water quality by breaking down organic pollutants. The biofilms and fine detritus caught in the filaments is a wonderful, very natural food source for shrimp, and they love to graze the round balls.
For this reason, moss balls should also be gently squeezed under running water from time to time to clean them. In the beginning, moss balls can still float up if they contain air. It can be removed by carefully squeezing them out.
