The ancestors of our Blue Glass Guppy females (Poecilia reticulata) originate from South America, although the Blue Glass color variety was bred in Japan. Sometimes the guppies are also called Blue Grass Guppies. Blue Glass Guppy females have the familiar dark pregnancy spot on the abdomen and wonderfully patterned blue caudal fins and an equally patterned dorsal fin. Blue Glass Guppy females grow to about 8-9 inches in length. In addition to their pattern and round body shape, you can also recognize female Guppies by their round shaped anal fin. In males this fin is pointed.
Poecilia reticulata belongs to the family of viviparous toothcarps. Here the females do not spawn, they give birth to live young - up to 20 young guppies per litter. In a properly planted aquarium, fry will pass through from time to time, even when guppies chase their offspring.
Poecilia reticulata are found in nature in medium to hard water and also in slightly salty water in estuaries. In the aquarium guppies tolerate soft to hard water. A water temperature of 22-28 °C in the aquarium is considered ideal for guppies.
The name million fish is rightly given to guppies: they are really prolific small fish, and in addition they are assertive and robust - this makes them perfect aquarium fish and real classics in aquaristics, which are not only interesting for beginners. Because of their proverbial eagerness to reproduce, it is often recommended to keep Guppies in an all-male or all-female group to avoid unwanted offspring. However, female guppies can store sperm during mating and may give birth to baby guppies without a male. If you want to breed specifically, we have Blue Glass Guppy males in the store.
Blue Glass Guppies can be easily kept in the aquarium with other small and peaceful aquarium fish. However, a socialization with Endler Guppies (Poecilia wingei) is not recommended, because Guppies and Endlers can crossbreed. A socialization with snails, with well reproducing and robust dwarf shrimps, Amano shrimps or fan shrimps is also possible, although Guppies can eat young shrimps. Fine feathery plants or moss cushions provide hiding places for the small dwarf shrimp.
Guppies prefer to feed on things from the water surface with their overhead mouths: biofilms, gravel, plant parts, mosquito larvae or insects. Algae are also part of their natural diet. Insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans complete their diet. Guppies also like to pick off algae in the aquarium and they love live food. Frozen foods, soft or scalded vegetables, or greens such as spinach, pumpkin, or nettle are also good additions to the aquarium diet of Blue Glass Guppies. The balanced NatureHolic Guppyfeed provides a good base for guppy feeding. Flake food or granulated food for omnivorous aquarium fish is also suitable for feeding guppies in the aquarium, but should be supplemented with vegetables and greens.
Our food recommendation: NatureHolic Guppyfeed is a fine soft granulate with 0.5 mm grain thickness, which is suitable as a staple food for all aquarium fish and especially for guppies. The soft consistency of the food beads is reminiscent of that of natural insect larvae. It protects the sensitive fish mouth from micro injuries caused by hard or sharp-edged food. In addition to animal food, guppies also need a vegetable component in their diet. As special additives we add garlic extract and the leaf powder of the miracle tree Moringa olifera to NatureHolic Guppyfeed. These herbal additives are said to have positive effects on the immune system and the colorfulness of the colorful fish.
Our plant recommendation: Use for planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planaria and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend when keeping fish the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
