The rough, relatively sharp-edged shapes look bizarre and very attractive. With their dark black coloration the aquarium rocks form a very nice contrast to green carpets of plants and also to the reddish brown roots that are often used in aquariums.
The aquarium rocks are slightly calcareous and can give off some lime to the water, especially in acidic water with a lot of CO2, thus slightly hardening the water.
