Bacopa caroliniana, the large fat leaf or Carolina fat leaf, is an aquarium plant that has been tried and tested for many years. It originates from North America. This stem plant grows relatively upright and has small light green, somewhat fleshy leaves that smell a little like lemon when rubbed. With low nitrate and phosphate in the water, the leaves take on a bronze hue that plays somewhat into pink. With a growth height of about 30-60 cm, the relatively slow-growing for a stem plant large fat leaf is a perfect aquatic plant for the background, even in not so large aquariums. This Bacopa looks most beautiful in a group.
Bacopa caroliniana does not need to be cut back very often thanks to its relatively slow growth. However, pruning will make the plants grow a bit more branched. The shoots produced by pruning can be used as head cuttings and used to plant new groups of the butterwort. To do this, simply insert them into the substrate.
The large butterwort Bacopa caroliniana needs quite a lot of light, but is quite frugal and adaptablewith regard to the supply of nutrients, water hardness and the supply of CO2.
Bacopa caroliniana can also grow emersed. Out of water, it develops a creeping habit and blooms purple. Yet it is not only a great plant for the garden pond, it also fits in large waterfall aquariums or paludariums and aquaterrariums. In warmer climates it may even be hardy if the pond is deep enough.
This InVitro cultivated Bacopa caroliniana is reliably slug-free as well as algae-free thanks to laboratory cultivation. Other co-inhabitants not welcome in the aquarium can also be excluded, as well as exposure to pesticides. For this reason, quarantine measures are unnecessary, you can put the Big fat leaf into the aquarium immediately after rinsing the culture medium from the roots.
