TGA Black staghorn snail - Clithon corona

The Southeast Asian black staghorn snail Clithon corona occurs in nature in smaller flowing waters with rather strong currents. It lives there in fresh water. The black staghorn snail is black to dark brown in base color and often has the typical spine-like appendages on the shell. Sometimes a darker fine stripe or net pattern can be seen. When the water parameters change, one can often see that the shell pattern changes. Clithon corona grows up to 2 cm in size. Although the staghorn snail is separately sexual, it is not possible to tell the sexes apart by external characteristics.

Staghorn snails prefer rather hard water with pH higher than 6.5, and carbonate hardness should be above 3 °dKH.

The females of the black staghorn snail attach their whitish oval egg cocoons to hard substrate. The veliger larvae that hatch from them need seawater to develop. In nature, they are washed into the sea with the current, where they grow and return to the streams as juvenile snails. They do not reproduce in the aquarium.

Black croissant snails feed on algae deposits and biofilms, and they even eat the hard green spot algae from the aquarium glass. They completely spare healthy plants. Staghorn snails do not accept artificial food well, but they do like to go after brown fall foliage, from which they graze the biofilms. Staghorn snails should not be introduced into completely clean aquariums because they need growth, especially at the beginning, to recover from the import. Snail food specifically designed for their needs is also well accepted.

Black Clithon corona are first class even from curious aquarium inhabitants due to their shell shape and can be socialized with all kinds of aquarium animals that do not explicitly eat snails.
