Green staghorn snail - Clithon corona

Clithon corona can be found in small freshwater, high-flow Southeast Asian streams. Other names are staghorn snail or sun snail. The green color form of Clithon corona sometimes has typical spine-like appendages on the shell, but it can also be smooth. Its basic color is a beautiful olive green, sometimes with a darker pattern of dots or fine lines, rarely spirals. In other water the color can change as well as the pattern. Clithon corona grows up to 2 cm in size. The green staghorn snail is separately sexual, but males and females cannot be distinguished from the outside.

Breeding in the aquarium has not been successful yet. The females lay their whitish-oval egg cocoons on hard substrates like stones, wood or on the shells of other snails. The tiny larvae that hatch from them are washed into the sea in the biotope, where they grow up.

The green form of Clithon corona tirelessly grazes algae growth and biofilms from aquarium glass and hard substrates. Healthy plants are not eaten. Especially in the beginning, the small snails do not take well to artificial food, so there must be sufficient algae growth in the aquarium. Freshly set up aquariums are not suitable.
